Overview

Ski Touring in the Alps with Chamonix Vertical

Ski touring is, for many of us, the best way to experience winter in the mountains. No lifts, no crowds, just quiet valleys, steady climbs, high passes, and long descents earned turn by turn in true alpine terrain. It is beautiful, and it is serious. Doing it well means choosing the right route, moving efficiently, reading the conditions, and making good decisions at the right time.

At Chamonix Vertical, we build guided ski touring and ski mountaineering programs across the Alps with IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guides. From single-day tours to hut-to-hut traverses, our approach is simple: we take care of the details, we listen properly, and we design a program that genuinely fits your level, your fitness and your objectives. And yes, you can reach us. If a quick phone call or WhatsApp exchange helps refine the plan, we do it.

Why ski tour with us

All our trips are led by IFMGA/UIAGM guides with real high-mountain experience, including route choice, timing, glacier travel and terrain management. We create truly tailor-made programs rather than selling the same itinerary to everyone. Logistics are clear and well prepared: huts, accommodation, transfers, equipment advice, realistic schedules, and a solid Plan B. Safety and sound judgement are central to how we guide: avalanche strategy, pacing and calm decision-making. We keep the atmosphere professional, friendly and straightforward, with a sense of humour when the moment allows.

What To Expect

Ski touring areas in the Alps (beyond Chamonix, Zermatt and Monte Rosa)

The Alps are huge, and each region has its own character: glaciated high routes, sunny limestone massifs, quiet valleys, steep couloirs, or long rolling tours. Here are a few of our favourite areas to build guided ski touring trips in the Alps, selected for terrain quality, flexibility and overall experience.

1

Aosta Valley (Italy): Courmayeur, La Thuile and side valleys

A reliable choice for snow and variety, with plenty of options from progressive touring days to more alpine objectives. Add Italian hospitality and efficient logistics, and you have an excellent base for a week of ski touring.

2

Bernese Oberland (Switzerland): Jungfrau Region and Aletsch area

Vast glaciers, dramatic scenery and a superb hut network. This is a fantastic destination for multi-day touring with a real high-mountain feel—big landscapes, classic routes, and the kind of terrain where good guiding truly matters.

3

Silvretta (Austria/Switzerland): the ideal first hut-to-hut traverse

One of the best places in the Alps for a first high-route style tour. Peaks around 3,000–3,300 m, logical itineraries, comfortable huts and plenty of terrain to enjoy while building skills and confidence.

4

Vanoise and Haute Tarentaise (France)

A strong option for a full touring week: varied terrain, good snow preservation and excellent flexibility to adapt the program to your group. It works very well for intermediate to advanced skiers looking for consistent, high-quality days.

5

Queyras and Écrins (France): quiet valleys and authentic mountain life

For those who prefer a wilder, less crowded atmosphere. The Queyras is often perfect for enjoyable day tours and progression; the Écrins brings a more alpine character and bigger terrain for strong groups.

6

The Dolomites (Italy): couloirs, limestone towers and culture

A unique alpine experience with spectacular scenery and excellent options for technical descents. Ideal for strong skiers who want steeper objectives and appreciate that good food is part of a good trip.

7

Ortler and Adamello (Italy): spring ski mountaineering terrain

Longer days, high plateaus and big descents. These regions shine in spring and suit skiers looking for a more mountaineering-style program and reliable late-season snow.

Program formats

We build the trip around what you want and what makes sense. We can run single-day tours for discovery, coaching, or simply finding the best conditions. Weekend programs (2–4 days) work well for a focused objective or a mini road trip. Hut-to-hut weeks (5–7 days) are the classic Alpine ski touring journey. For advanced skiers, we also design technical ski mountaineering weeks with steeper terrain, couloirs and, when needed, crampons and glacier travel.

We always keep flexibility in the plan. In the Alps, the best itinerary is the one that still works when the weather or snowpack changes.

Who is it for?

For anyone with a solid off-piste level who wants to explore the Alps beyond the lifts, whether you are discovering ski touring or aiming for more technical lines. The key is choosing the right objective: not too easy, not too ambitious, and always appropriate for the conditions. Tell us about your experience and goals, and we will recommend the right region and format, clearly and honestly.

Let’s plan your tour

Send us your dates, group size and what you are looking for: progression, huts, summits, steeper skiing, or a relaxed touring week. We will come back with a realistic proposal and adapt it with you. If a quick call helps, even better, this is how we work.
