Overview

Gran Paradiso (4,061 m) is one of the most accessible and rewarding 4,000-metre ski touring peaks in the Alps. Located in the heart of Italy’s Gran Paradiso National Park, it offers a classic high-mountain ascent in a wild and well-preserved alpine environment.

With its reliable snow conditions, impressive scenery and friendly Italian mountain huts, Gran Paradiso offers a perfect balance of progression, enjoyment and alpine adventure. And after the descent, there is always time to celebrate the summit with a well-deserved Italian cappuccino in the valley.

What To Expect

Ski touring on Gran Paradiso

The ski ascent combines long glacial approaches with generally moderate slopes, making it an excellent objective for intermediate ski tourers aiming to reach their first 4,000-metre summit. The final section to the top usually requires leaving the skis behind for a short, exposed ridge, adding a true alpine character to the ascent.

The summit can be reached from either the Chabod hut or the Vittorio Emanuele II hut, depending on conditions, logistics and the overall program. Both options offer a comfortable and welcoming base for the ascent, with classic routes and enjoyable skiing on the descent.

Although Gran Paradiso is considered one of the more accessible 4,000-metre peaks, good acclimatization is essential. For this reason, we recommend approaching this objective as part of a 6-day program, ensuring solid preparation and proper adaptation to altitude. The ascent of Gran Paradiso itself usually requires two to three days, depending on the level, pace and availability of the participants. This program can be combined with acclimatization days in the Monte Rosa area or in the Mont Blanc massif, before finishing with the ascent of this classic Italian 4,000-metre peak.

The ascent requires a solid intermediate level in ski touring, good control on variable snow and some prior experience in alpine terrain, including basic crampon use.

All programs are led by an IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guide from Chamonix Vertical and adapted to conditions and the level of the group, ensuring a safe and rewarding ski mountaineering experience.
