Chamonix is one of the best places in the Alps for ski touring, and not only because of Mont Blanc. Within a single valley you have a rare mix of high alpine terrain, sheltered forests, classic glaciated descents, and quick access to different aspects and altitudes. That means we can usually find excellent skiing, even when conditions are tricky somewhere else.
With Chamonix Vertical, our ski touring day trips are led by IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guides and built around one clear idea: the right tour on the right day, for the right group. We keep it local, we keep it realistic, and we keep it personal. Before you book, you can speak with us directly by phone or WhatsApp so we understand your skiing level, touring experience and objectives. Then we propose the best options and adapt the itinerary to current snow and weather conditions.
A typical day starts with a quick briefing: weather, avalanche bulletin, objective, timing, and an equipment check (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe). We fine-tune the plan depending on conditions and the group’s level. Then it is all about good rhythm: efficient climbs, smart transitions, and the best possible descent for the day. Our job is to manage safety, route choice and timing, yours is to enjoy the turns.
Chamonix offers four main touring zones, each with a different style. Below are examples of classic day tours. The exact route is always chosen according to conditions, avalanche risk and the level of the group.
This is the “big mountain” side of Chamonix: high altitude, glacier travel and serious scenery. These tours are ideal for strong ski tourers who are comfortable off-piste and want a real alpine day.
Examples (depending on conditions): Col du Passon, Aiguille du Tour (ski mountaineering variations), Col des Grands Montets / Rognons sector, glacier tours above Argentière. Some itineraries may include crampon sections or a short bootpack.
Just opposite Mont Blanc, the Aiguilles Rouges offer quick access, varied terrain and excellent descents. Often a great choice for intermediate ski tourers, and also a strong option when we want to avoid glaciated terrain.
Examples: classic tours from the Brévent / Flégère sector with beautiful descents into the valley, and steeper options for advanced groups when conditions are stable.
This area is one of the best bases for day tours: good altitude, reliable snow, and a wide range of objectives. It works well for many levels and allows us to adapt the day easily.
Examples: Le Tour side valleys, classic cols and bowls around the Balme sector, and longer days linking different descents depending on timing and snow quality.
A slightly less “busy” corner near Chamonix with a more remote feel, excellent touring terrain and often very good snow preservation. A great destination for those who want calm mountains and a full ski touring day away from the Chamonix lift hubs.
Examples: day tours in the Montjoie sector with long descents and a more wilderness feel, chosen according to conditions.
Chamonix is high mountain terrain. Conditions change fast, and many routes require strong decision-making. Our IFMGA/UIAGM guides manage route selection, timing, avalanche strategy and, when necessary, glacier travel techniques. We also keep the logistics simple: clear meeting points, realistic schedules, and honest advice on what will make the day successful.
Tell us your dates, your group size and your level. We will recommend the best zone and objective for the conditions, and we can also help you with equipment advice and rental options if needed. If you want to build towards bigger goals (Haute Route, 4,000 m peaks, Mont Blanc on skis), we can use your day trips as a progressive training plan.
